DEAD HEAD

Dead Head is a condition where the first and/or second operation seam is not completely formed around the circumference of the can.

POTENTIAL CAUSES:

  • Seaming chuck worn or undersized.

  • Pin gage height is too great for the can height.

  • Insufficient lower lifter spring pressure.

  • Seaming chuck radius does not match cover radius (chuck fit).

  • Too tight first or second operation seaming rolls.

  • Seaming roll bearing binding.

  • Lower Lifter bearings not turning freely.

SUGGESTED REMEDY:

  • Replace seaming chuck.

  • Reset pin height for can being run.

  • Refer to your can manufacturer’s Top Double Seam Guide.

  • Replace seaming chuck with one having proper radius.

  • Adjust seaming rolls.

  • Replace bearing.

  • Replace bearing or correct clearance.
