Dead Head is a condition where the first and/or second operation seam is not completely formed around the circumference of the can.
POTENTIAL CAUSES:
Seaming chuck worn or undersized.
Pin gage height is too great for the can height.
Insufficient lower lifter spring pressure.
Seaming chuck radius does not match cover radius (chuck fit).
Too tight first or second operation seaming rolls.
Seaming roll bearing binding.
Lower Lifter bearings not turning freely.
SUGGESTED REMEDY:
Replace seaming chuck.
Reset pin height for can being run.
Refer to your can manufacturer’s Top Double Seam Guide.
Replace seaming chuck with one having proper radius.
Adjust seaming rolls.
Replace bearing.
Replace bearing or correct clearance.
