A Short Cover Hook is a condition where the cover hook does not meet the minimum recommended specification.
POTENTIAL CAUSES:
- Deep countersink limits the amount of metal available for cover hook.
- Loose second seaming roll setting.
- Worn first operation seaming roll groove.
- First operation seaming roll groove profile incorrect.
- Long body hooks.
- Worn first operation seaming roll bearing or seaming roll pin.
- First operation seaming roll set too tight or loose.
- Insufficient seaming stock.
SUGGESTED REMEDY:
- Reset chuck to roll relationship on first and/or second operation rolls.
- Tighten second operation seaming roll.
- Replace first operation seaming roll.
- Replace first operation seaming roll with proper groove profile. See your can manufacturer’s Top Double Seam Guideline.
- Reduce spring pressure of lower lifters and/or adjust pin height to proper setting.
- Replace worn seaming roll bearing or seaming roll pin.
- Adjust first operation seaming roll for appropriate tightness.
- Discuss with end manufacturer.
